Whether this is your first MUN conference, or you're an experienced delegate research and preparation is always important in your success at a conference. This section will guide you through your preparations for an MCBMUN conference. These guides will be available soon, in plenty of time for the conference.

Research

The first step to Model UN preparation is research. This section poses helpful research questions and points you to the best resources for gathering information on your country and its positions, the topics to be discussed at the conference, and the UN system.

Country Representation

Shortly after you register for MCBMUN, your delegation will receive its country assignments. Learn how to effectively assign countries among your MUN delegation.

Briefings & Position Papers

Briefings are an outline for what you will be debating during the conference. Position papers allow you to explain your country's position on an issue and start to provide ideas on how the committee should address the issue. This section explains how to read a briefing, write a position paper and provides some helpful tips and even a sample to help you write an effective position paper.

The Debate

Speeches, amendments, resolutions, voting... It can all be a bit complicated at first, but our guide will help you through the worst of it, and you'll be surprised how quickly you get used to it during a debate.

Speaking

Speaking

Speaking in public is hard for us all at first. What if I get my words muddled? What if I offend him or her? Will the chair really let me say that? Get tips from long-standing MUNers on how to get over the initial fear or dread of standing in front of 300 people to talk about your issue.

Parliamentary Procedure

MUN debates are controlled debates which must follow certain rules in order to maintain order. These can be quite tricky to get the hang of, so we've put together a guide.

Lobbying and Caucuses

Getting your opinion across can be difficult during a debate, but fortunately, there are times during a debate when you can talk more informally to other delegates, and form alliances and 'yielding chains'.

Resolution Writing

All debates in MUN centre around a resolution; this is like a Bill in the House of Commons - it starts out as a skeleton proposal, which is amended and debated by your committee, and then voted on, to come into force.

Dressing for Success

MUN is a formal environment, and to get by and be successful you've got to dress  for the part.

The Ceilidh

At MCBMUN we take evening entertainment seriously. So we're even providing a guide to it: the MCBMUN Ceilidh!
